What does FDA Approval really mean to consumers? Not much! The American public has been led to believe that the FDA conducts its own independent studies of drugs, then makes a decision based on research whether or not to approve them. This never happens. The FDA is not funded to perform studies which would lead to the approval of drugs. All studies are developed, supervised and paid for by the drug companies. The drug companies use their own doctors, researchers and select the people for the tests. Tests are run over and over until the drug companies get the results they need or want. Patients are even dropped from the studies to skew the numbers in the drug companys favor. FDA Approval does not mean that the drug trials by manufacturers demonstrate either safety or efficacy. What it does mean is the drug manufacturers have supplied the FDA with sufficient data to support claims. Dr. Peter Breggin gives an excellent summary in his book, Toxic Psychiatry, "The real problem, as we have seen, lies in the normal functioning of the FDA as it misleads the public into believing that psychiatric drugs are safe and efficacious when in fact they are neither". The drug companies are the largest and most profitable money making group in the world. If you are given a prescription for a medication, request the package insert and read it carefully. If you do not understand it, ask the pharmacist to explain the side effects or any other important data you should be aware of. Drugs affect brain function. Before you take them or give them to your child, you should know what to expect so you can make an informed decision. |
